The island nation of Madagascar is home to biodiverse rainforests, including more than 2,000 unique plant species, providing the habitat for 14 species of endangered lemur. But now, a massive "sapphire rush" has destroyed many thousands of acres of forests, putting wildlife in grave danger.

The government of Madagascar must take urgent action to ensure miners don't destroy any more of these protected forests.

Local officials and environmental groups can't keep up with the tens of thousands of miners and gem traders who've descended on the once-pristine rainforests in search of the region's high-quality sapphires. As a result, environmental destruction continues unchecked.

The national government must step in now, before more forests are lost.

Conservationists have called for a military intervention, similar to when the government sent in the army during a smaller rush in 2012. Local police forces cannot handle the wild west-like sapphire rush without the national government's intervention.

We need to make sure the government pulls out all the stops to protect its rainforests.

Please sign the petition to the government of Madagascar to show that the international community stands with conservationists. We must do all that we can to save these rainforests from destruction.

Thank you,
