Ruperta is an African elephant living at the Caricuao Zoo in Venezuela. She is 46 years old and the local people adore her. But she's also slowly starving to death — just like fifty of her fellow animals who died because of food shortages at the zoo last year.

A group of concerned Venezuelans have started a Care2 petition demanding that the Caricuao Zoo send Ruperta to an elephant sanctuary. Will you sign their petition?

In late March, Ruperta fell down and became unable to stand because she was so dehydrated, malnourished and sick. Now, her bones protrude from her body and her face looks sunken. Venezuelans have become so worried about her health that neighbors have tried to bring her food and went so far as to launch a food drive. But the zoo has turned down their offerings, saying they can't accept outside food because of sanitation concerns. It seems that they would prefer to allow her to starve instead.

Even workers who belong to the union for state park employees, Inparques, have had enough. They've filed official complaints against the government, demanding that the authorities find a solution for the food problem at Venezuelan zoos. The government has not responded.

It's clear that the Venezuelan government is not taking adequate steps to keep Ruperta safe and healthy. Tell the Caricuao Zoo to relocate Ruperta to an animal sanctuary that has adequate food, before it is too late!

Thank you for all that you do,
