Pets at Home is the UK's largest pet shop chain, with more than 370 stores. On their own website they state, "Syrian hamsters need a lot of exercise, so buy as big a cage as possible, ideally with a deep plastic base and wire top." They clearly suggest that the bigger the cage, the better the life the hamster will have. Yet, Care2 member Ollie was disappointed to find that they don't sell any cages that are of the minimum recommended size requirements for hamsters! If a hamster doesn't have enough space, it will become bored, stressed and inactive.

Whether you agree with keeping hamsters as pets or not — people are buying hamsters, and hamster cages from pet shops. So it's essential that they are given proper information, and are able to buy cages of a larger size, as advised by animal welfare experts.

Ollie says on his petition, "Buyers are being misled and given the wrong information regarding hamster cage sizes every day — when I bought my first hamster from Pets at Home, he was sold to me with a dwarf hamster cage! By the time I realised, his spine had been damaged due to using an unsuitably sized wheel."

Please sign Ollie's petition to tell Pets at Home to sell only appropriately sized cages, with appropriately sized wheels, and to make sure buyers are given correct information regarding pet care.

Thank you,
